Spawning appears to have been good as it was very difficult
most of the time to observe the fish due to continuous high
water levels and mostly very dull overcast conditions, on
certain days when weather was resonable there were flurrys
of activity. The very tail of the Shepherds pool was quite
active with fish moving up into the pool causing a lot of
disturbance. The Bo bahn pool was very active on the particular
afternoon Iwent down for a look. On the upper beat from the
meetings pool down to the head of the Corner pool there was
a lot of spawning activity particularly around the 16th to
20th November. The biggest salmon i saw during spawning was
a cock fish of approx 16 to 18 lbs he was mainly in the runs
imediatley below Shimmys pool, as usual with any particularly
large fish he was contiually charging around chasing all the
other cock fish.
One
really interesting episode happened right in front of me,
I was standing in around 8 inches of water with a great view
of two really agressive cock fish one of around 10lbs the
other of about 6lbs. The 6 pounder would try to see off the
10 pounder by charging at it and giving it a real bang in
the mid drift opening its mouth as it did it. However the
bigger fish would use its very pronounced kype to ram into
the side of the the smaller fish also oppening its mouth as
it did it, on three occasions it clamped its jaws into the
back and side of the smaller fish. It was great to see at
really close range but unfortunately it was very dull to get
a good photo.
By all accounts good numbers of fish were seen up in Glen
Mhor and Deanich, I was going to go up with Jonnie Shaw for
a look but the continuous high water put paid to it.
I know that a lot of Salmon went over the Glencalvie falls,
having witnessed a lot go over at the end of July. During
big water one day in early November I saw several salmon milling
around at the mouth of the overflow side channel that empties
back into the main river at the tail of Dollys pool, ten days
later i walked up the side channel which was not flowing at
all and saw a cock fish of about 9 or 10 lbs, whether this
salmon was involved in any spawning in the channel is anybodys
guess but it was interesting seeing it in there.
I
also saw a salmon just below the road bridge over the Sgodachail
burn that runs into the head of the
Shepherds pool. I mentioned it to Ronnie Ross the Braelangwell
keeper and he said he had seen them going up
the burn this year also.
