Spawning at Amat 2001
I am glad to say there appears to be a good head of Salmon spawning this back end, the water has been big since the end of the season very big at times. In fact in the last two months since the season closed the river has only been at a low level for about seven days! The Salmon are even later spawning this year due I think to the very high water levels, also apart from two cold spells that brought a little snow it has been very mild for the time of year.
All of the usual spawning area's were active the most activity seen as usual at Temple, Long, Millars,& Shepards. Earlier on in late October there was still quite an upstream movement of fish around this time a lot of Salmon were congregating in Craigs, Dolly's, & Sandy's pools. Some of the big Salmon that were in evidence during the fishing season were showing up on the redds at spawning time one of around 20lbs was seen Curve pool, and another bigger one seen in Bo Bahn. A number of Salmon still haven't spawned yet - I was down looking on 22nd 23rd Nov, and saw several hens still full of eggs (see photo of the hen moving upstream). To day 25th Nov, river beginning to rise from a very good height to what looks to be another big spate, very quiet looks as though the spawning is about over. Quite a few salmon were spawning in an area of gravel at top end of the Bo Bahn which for the last two seasons had become compacted with silt. Part of it becomes exposed in low water and is quite hard. This area has levelled out and is in fact bigger than it has been for a few seasons, although the gravel is stable it is now easy to get a depth of eight inch which water can easily percolate through when the eggs are in the gravel and covered.
The bottom end of Bo Bahn always has spawners right down to the trees on the Amat bank. Down at Cornhill the Wall and March pools have had a fair bit of activity during spawning also the run between Gledfield & Raven has seen a fair bit of activity around Nov 5th.
